Buying guide
The bulk edible oil buying checklist
A better enquiry starts with a precise grade, an agreed specification and a realistic packing plan.
Start with the product identity
Write the oil category and the exact grade. Refined sunflower oil and crude sunflower oil belong in different enquiries. For palm products, identify whether you need whole palm oil, olein or stearin. For olive products, distinguish refined olive oil from virgin oil or olive-pomace oil.
Describe the use before comparing offers
A retail importer, a catering distributor and a refinery need different information. State how the oil will be used, where it will be sold and any specification already required by your customer.
Make the quantity meaningful
State whether you are buying metric tonnes, litres, cartons or a container load. A container request still needs a final packing and loading plan. Include whether it is a trial shipment or a recurring requirement, without treating a forecast as a firm order.
Ask for these details in writing
- Product grade, composition and country of origin.
- Current signed specification and a lot-specific certificate of analysis.
- Pack volume, units per carton, carton dimensions and weights.
- Destination country and port, delivery term and required timing.
- Label language, remaining shelf life and relevant certification evidence.
- Payment terms, inspection arrangements and document requirements.
Compare offers on the same basis
An ex-works price and a delivered price answer different questions. Compare the same oil grade, quantity, pack, destination and delivery scope. Ask which costs and documents are included in the written offer rather than assuming that a headline price includes them.
Use a complete brief
The enquiry builder brings these details together into a downloadable brief. It does not place an order or confirm availability.
